(Johannesburg – 19th August) Fortress REIT Limited (Fortress), the JSE-listed property group, hosted a wellness campaign and volunteer day programme at Tienbank Senior Primary School in the Eastern Cape town of Sterkspruit ahead of the grand opening of the 2nd phase development at the Sterkspruit Plaza shopping centre.

The “Run, Eat, Grow” health and wellness campaign was facilitated in conjunction with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), a leading Section 21 Non-Profit Organisation that focusses on promoting food security initiatives, environmental sustainability and greening of previously disadvantaged communities. The wellness campaign took place on 7 August and saw 75 learners from Tienbank Senior Primary School join forces with FTFA and Fortress to plant 40 trees on the school premises and distribute a further 1,500 trees to the surrounding community.

“Once again we’ve been amazed at the enthusiasm and incredible interest from both learners and the local community in getting involved in this wonderful food security and greening initiative,” said Ms Jodie Ellinor-Dreyer of Fortress. “The great things about this programme is that it not only provides sustainable forms of nourishment but also enhances communities aesthetically and promotes a sense of pride and sense of place amongst people living in the area of impact.”

Fortress and FTFA are in the process of rolling out its landmark Trees for All and Trees for Homes programmes, a 15-month initiative that involves the planting of 500 trees at 12 schools in the area, as well as the mass distribution of 1,500 trees to 750 to homes in communities surrounding those schools.

The programme’s efforts in Sterkspruit will also see Fortress partnering with the ISMO Athletics Club to support the Telle Bridge Marathon event, which takes place on 29 September 2019 in Sterkspruit, just a month after the opening of the 2nd phase development at Sterkspruit Plaza, which is scheduled for the 22 August 2019.

The 15,045m2 Sterkspruit Plaza retail facility is located on the corner of Zastron road and Voyizana road in Sterkspruit, providing a convenient community retail experience for the local communities. Some of the nationwide retailers in Sterkspruit Plaza include Shoprite, Jet, OK Furniture, Clicks and Mr Price.

“The wellbeing of communities surrounding our centres is of primary importance to us so we are making every effort to enhance their everyday lives and promote pride and a sense of place amongst the people who support us on a daily basis,” said Ms Ellinor-Dreyer. “Ultimately, a healthy community is a happy one and the happier the community the greater the sense of long-term sustainability for all parties that have a stake in its success.”
